UX & Visual
Design

As a kid, I scribbled on every wall in the house. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I eventually aspired to create fine art, posters, and album covers. Inspired by the print design grunge acts of the 90s, like David Carson and Neville Brody, I fell in love with the harmony of art and communication. In 1998, I set out for art school to pursue Graphic Design. But as Silicon Valley matured, it had other plans for me, as Graphic Design quickly became Web Design. I didn’t know it at the time, but as I was trying to perfect the balance between elegance in pixels on one end and usability on the other, I was starting to walk down the path of what we now know today as User Experience Design.

I’ve been chasing that balance ever since and I’ve learned a little more about the craft. With every project, I seek evermore refinement through the craft. Backed by UX research, sometimes I’m dead center. Other times, in left field and deeply humbled. I’m still chasing that perfect balance, never quite getting there, but it always seems like it’s just around the corner…

crafting coherence—
Building a design system

As the UX Design Lead for the growing Design System at Kaiser Permanente, my role involved championing and strengthening the system. With digital healthcare products, maintaining design consistency and accessibility is paramount. The pivotal solution lies in implementing a Design System that inherently incorporates usability and accessibility into its fundamental elements. However, grappling with numerous components, diverse product specifications, and varying user demands posed the challenge of maintaining organization and cohesiveness within the system. How could we effectively orchestrate and harmonize these moving parts to ensure a unified and streamlined user experience?

ign

solid foundations—
site redesign

As a product/visual designer at IGN, I played a part in redesigning the website in 2010. The goal was not just to perform a visual clean up, but also reassess the main priorities for the organization which would be represented in the new design. IGN offers so much timely content to its core audience, from in-depth video game reviews to weekly podcasts, video coverage of major tech events, and so much more. It was clear to me and the team that the content in all forms should feel like it was center stage. Prior to this, content was in competition with other components, like advertising units. It would also provide an opportunity for me to leverage basic visual design fundamentals to meet the goals.
